Heart
Heart
Project: NIDA Magic Show

Heart effect
Materials: Latex toy heart, Silicone, fake blood, sponge, syringe
I started by using foam clay to sculpt details into a cheap latex party store heart before painting it with detailed colours and blue veins, I cut holes in areas where I wanted the fake blood to spray from
I then mixed caulking silicone, shellite and silicone pigments to create a gorey and bloody texture for the heart, applying the silicone in several layers by brush
I then stuffed a large sponge into the heart so that it could fill up with fake blood and store it inside without leaking
Finally, the heart is filled via syringe with fake blood and squeezed for the heart bursting effect
hand effect
Materials: Silicone, balloon, fake blood, expanding foam, pinkysil, acrylic
I started by making the hand from expanding foam, attaching it with wire and epoxy resin to a silicone stump wrist with a 5mm steel pipe run through as the blood funnell
I then used skin makeup on the hand so that the acrylic paint wouldn't crack it, I used talq on the makeup so that it would set in place and not smudge.
I then then used caulking silicone mixed with shellite and silicone pigments to gore up the section connecting the broken wrist and stump with several layers.
I then used small broken acrylic pieces to lodge into the hand and wrist to make it appear as though it had broken through a window
Finally, I taped a balloon to the bottom of the pipe so that it could fill with fake blood and spray out of the broken wrist
Head explosion
Materials: paper mache, balloon, string, fake blood, expanding foam, polyethylene mannequin, oats
Using a pump I was able to transfer a fake blood recipe into a balloon until it was roughly the size of a human head, I then mounted the head onto a polyethylene mannequin torso which I dressed to match the actor on stage
I then cut apart a paper mache face mask into strips, leaving the bottom jaw attached to the neck so that when the head (balloon) explodes the jaw is all that's left. The paper mache face mask is constructed while the balloon isn't popped and hangs as flaps past the jaw after it explodes
Then using the same mould for the hand effect, I made two expanding foam hands to be fitted into the sleeves of the shirt on the mannequin, sticks were glued into the bottoms of the hands so that they could be puppeteer by two hidden people.
Finally, I attached resin printed teeth onto the lower jaw and cut up a curly haired wig to mount on the balloon to match the actor.
